When should I sow strawberry seeds?

It is best to plant strawberries in the spring. Then you can eat fresh strawberries in the summer. It is best to plant them between February and April. For a sweet harvest it is advisable not to put the strawberries in the full sun. Covering the plants with a net stops birds from getting at your strawberries. Do not plant the strawberry seeds too close to one another. This may lead to the emerging plants oppressing each other. Before you sow your seeds always read the instructions on the packaging.

Fruit Strawberry Alexandria 200 Non-GMO, Heirloom Seeds

Alexandria Strawberries are alpine strawberries from seed. Day-neutral. These decorative little plants produce delicious, aromatic red strawberries, about twice the size of wild berries but much smaller than the standard type. Perennials, Alpine strawberries stay compact and produce few runners, making them suitable for rock gardens, path edgings, pots, and window boxes. They begin producing the second spring, sometimes the first fall. Grows best in zones 5 to 8. Red ripe strawberries in 2nd year, some the first year.

Fruit Strawberry Mignonette 100 Non-GMO, Hybrid Seeds

Mignonette’ is the tastiest red alpine variety in our opinion. It is not as productive as some other reds like ‘Reine des Vallees’ but the 1″ long conical shaped fruit has an aroma and taste unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. We have found that this selection may not be as hardy as some of the other selections so mulch well for winter in colder zones.

Special note: Hard to get started. Not for novice gardeners. Will require indoor lighting unless in a greenhouse with 8 to 12 hours of lighting.

DO NOT DIRECT SOW. Will need about four weeks of constant 75 degrees to germinate. Strawberries are not easy to germinate.

Fruit Strawberry Red Wonder 50 Non-GMO, Hybrid Seeds

Red Wonder is commonly grown in parts of Western Europe. The scarlet red fruit has excellent flavor and aroma. The plants are strong growers and very productive. Harvest in about 90 days.

Fruit Strawberry Yellow Wonder 50 Non-GMO, Hybrid Seeds

Yellow Wonder is a very productive alpine strawberry cultivar. It is considered a wild strawberry. Plants form clumps instead of producing runners. Flowering is initiated independent of day length which is called a day neutral cultivar. Productivity is comparable to top red fruiting cultivars. The fruit is a creamy yellow that is exceptionally sweet. Birds tend to ignore the fruit. Harvest in about 90 days.
