Today we launched Border Protect, with the Minister of Customs, Hon Meka Whaitiri.
This is a campaign to encourage and educate New Zealanders to “look, listen, report” information on border threats, beyond just the coastline.
Anyone can call the new 24/7 confidential hotline 0800 WE PROTECT (0800 937 768) if you see signs of potential crime around coastlines, air, and seaports, international freight arrival areas, and Customs Controlled Areas (CCAs).

Mike has been protecting New Zealand’s borders for almost 64 years! He first started in the Royal New Zealand Navy, before moving over to New Zealand Customs, where he has been since 1969.
Mike followed proudly in his grandfather William’s footsteps, who was a part of the Customs whanau for 43 years.

Across four days last week, our recruitment team spoke to tamariki from 16 high schools at the Northland Careers fair and gave them an insight into the career possibilities at Customs.
Most students were amazed at the diversity of work Customs offers, and the full scale of work we do protecting New Zealand’s border.
It was awesome seeing the interest and enthusiasm the students showed in the various roles that go into keeping Aotearoa safe – we hope to see them joining our Customs whānau soon!
