According to the certificate of analysis (COA) published on June 22, 2020, Innovet PurCBD + 750mg (Batch E3 Lot AN) contains 827 milligrams (mg) of CBD per bottle (2) .

What is CBD Oil?

Phytocannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol ( THC ), cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG), and cannabinol (CBN) can be found in hemp and marijuana ( Cannabis sativa ).

CBD is predominantly found in hemp, while THC is found in marijuana.

To create CBD oil products, manufacturers extract the cannabinoids from mature hemp stalks and flowers.

Extraction methods vary depending on the CBD company. Some CBD companies prefer to use CO 2 extraction due to the absence of solvents and chemicals.

Currently, there are three types of CBD products in the market.

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all the phytocannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes found in hemp plants.

Meanwhile, broad-spectrum CBD contains all the compounds except for THC. Lastly, individuals who prefer to take pure CBD may opt for CBD isolate.

What Are the Health Benefits of CBD Oil for Pets?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a modulatory system composed of cannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors and enzymes .

The ECS receptors are found in the central nervous system, immune system, and organs. Mammals, including humans, have the ECS in their bodies.

Phytocannabinoids, such as CBD, have the potential to interact with the receptors. This interaction influences the internal processes, potentially providing several therapeutic benefits (10) .

Large and older dogs may experience arthritis and hip dysplasia due to environmental and genetic factors (11) .

CBD might help relieve chronic pain and joint pain in dogs. Based on studies, CBD may be useful as a pain reliever.

A review from Frontiers in Veterinary Science mentioned that CBD might possess anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperalgesic (pain sensitivity) properties (12) .

The prevalence of osteoarthritis in old horses have been observed by several studies (13) .

A review has shown how CBD may help improve limb posture and reduce inflammation in arthritis rat models (14) .

However, there is a lack of scientific evidence showing CBD’s efficacy in relieving arthritis pain in horses. Even though horses and rats have ECS receptors, they may respond differently to CBD.

CBD has been observed to provide anti-convulsant effects. The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association published a 2019 study that tested CBD’s efficacy in alleviating canine idiopathic epilepsy symptoms (15) .

According to the authors, CBD’s potential to reduce seizure frequency in dogs must be further explored by additional studies.

Meanwhile, pet owners must practice caution when administering CBD to their pets.

Human studies have shown that CBD might cause negative side effects, such as diarrhea, fatigue, and vomiting. Animal studies have shown that CBD might cause neurotoxicity, hepatocellular injury, and nervous system inhibitions (16) .

Do Vets Recommend CBD?

A 2019 review investigated whether veterinarians feel comfortable discussing CBD’s potential to improve a pet’s quality of life (17) .

Using data retrieved from the Veterinary Information Network (VIN), the authors found that 61.5% of vets were comfortable discussing CBD oil with colleagues. Meanwhile, only 45.5% felt they could discuss CBD with their clients (18) .

Pet owners must always consult with licensed veterinarians before administering CBD oil to their pets.

Note that, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, federal and state laws prohibit veterinarians from administering, dispensing, prescribing, or recommending cannabis to treat animals (19) .

How Can One Find a Good Pet CBD Company?

The best CBD products are developed by companies with ethical business practices. ‘

Customers may check the company’s status through the Better Business Bureau (BBB). CBD companies with high BBB ratings were graded according to their business practices, product quality, and customer service (20) .

Moreover, buyers looking for good CBD products may prefer those that come from hemp farms under strict regulations .

For example, the State of Colorado requires farmers to submit to sample testing before harvest. Moreover, the state thoroughly conducts background checks on aspiring hemp growers (21) .

Furthermore, high-quality product claims must always be supported by third-party lab test results.

Pet owners shopping for CBD-infused pet treats may also opt for products made from natural ingredients. The fillers, additives, and preservatives in food products may cause harm to pets.

Conclusion

Innovet was created by pet parents looking for alternative solutions for pets’ health.

The company is on a mission to provide high-quality CBD oil that you can be confident to buy for your furry friends.

Innovet aims to set itself apart from other CBD brands by focusing on improving its quality and customer service. The brand also makes it its mission to engage and educate the CBD community.

My dog has diabetes and has always had trouble with his glucose number being over 300 on a regular basis and sometimes as high as 600. But since starting the CBD oil it has consistently been under 200. He has a little more energy and alertness as well. With CBD and insulin he is a different, better feeling dog.

My dog is a senior pug. He has major hip issues that result in very limited mobility. Without the medications from innovet he would probably be in a wheelchair. If he misses a couple of days you can tell he feels much worse. CBD and joint supplements have extended his quality years.

The Research

CBD for dogs: top considerations

We considered multiple criteria to find the best CBD products for dogs, including: third-party testing, CBD type, ingredients, potency, hemp quality, brand reputation, and price.

Third-party testing

Completed by independent labs, third-party tests make sure that CBD products are free of contaminants and contain what they should. We recommend only buying products from brands that provide up-to-date third-party lab test results.

CBD type

CBD is available in full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate forms. Full-spectrum CBD is believed to provide greater benefits than CBD isolate because it contains numerous cannabinoids and terpenes, including less than 0.3% THC.

Ingredients

Many CBD products for dogs are formulated with additional active ingredients designed for specific benefits, such as turmeric for joint health or methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant supplement.

Potency

Potency is an important concern because dogs require smaller doses of CBD and are more sensitive to cannabinoids (especially THC) than humans are. We recommend products with multiple potency options, making it easy to choose the right one for your dog’s size.

Hemp quality

Ideally, you want to find CBD products sourced from organic hemp that’s cultivated directly by the company. The USDA-organic label and U.S. Hemp Authority certification are also good signs of hemp quality.

Brand reputation

Satisfied customer reviews are one of the best ways to identify trustworthy CBD companies. Reputable brands are also transparent and share helpful details about their production process, the people behind the company, and more.

Price

CBD products aren’t cheap, and you’ll find that many brands inflate the prices for dog products, even if they contain virtually the same ingredients as human ones. We recommend finding affordable options by comparing the price per mg of CBD and considering deals like free shipping, subscriptions, and more.

How the top CBD dog products compare

Innovet Oil Full-spectrum 125 – 6000 mg 4.2 – 200mg/ml 30ml $0.03 – 0.17
Innovet Treats Isolate 90 – 450mg 1 – 5mg 25 – 180 $0.07 – 0.33
Honest Paws Full-spectrum 125 – 1000mg 4.2 – 33.3mg/ml 30ml $0.10 – 0.32

CBD for dogs: scientific research

Compared to humans, research on CBD’s benefits for dogs is limited. But early findings are promising:

  • A 2021 study of shelter dogs found that CBD reduced aggressive behavior towards humans, although the effect was not statistically significant.
  • A 2021 study of dog immune cells found that CBD had anti-inflammatory and immuno-modulating effects.
  • In a 2020 study, CBD led to improvements in quality of life in dogs with osteoarthritis, whereas placebo had no significant effect.
  • In a similar 2020 study, adding CBD to anti-inflammatory drugs in dogs affected by osteoarthritis led to reductions in pain.
  • A 2019 study of dogs with difficult-to-treat epilepsy found that CBD in combination with antiepileptic medicine significantly reduced seizure frequency.
  • A 2018 study of dogs with osteoarthritis found that CBD reduced pain and improved activity levels, unlike placebo treatment.
  • CBD showed anti-cancer effects against canine cancer in several studies.

Additionally, a 2019 survey of 2,130 American veterinarians reported that 82.2% approved or strongly approved the medical use of CBD/hemp products for dogs. CBD was most commonly discussed by vets or pet owners for helping with pain, anxiety, seizures, storm or fireworks-related phobias, and gastrointestinal conditions.

All in all, it’s clear that CBD has many of the same potential benefits for dogs as for humans. But research is still in its early stages and more evidence is needed.

Is CBD safe for dogs?

Available research suggests that CBD is safe for dogs. Although it can cause sedation, a 12-week study where CBD was given orally twice a day did not report any side effects, with the researchers concluding that “CBD-rich hemp nutraceuticals appear to be safe in healthy adult dogs.”

A similar 2021 study using high dosages and placebo for comparison reported only mild side effects, like hypersalivation and increased liver enzymes. Having said that, dogs are more sensitive to the effects of THC because they have more cannabinoid receptors in the brain.

A 2020 study that tested the effects of CBD-rich extracts in dogs found that high doses (10mg CBD alongside 0.5mg THC/kg of body weight) caused side effects, such as hyperesthesia (increased sensitivity of the senses, like sight or touch), swaying, and abnormal movements. These effects were attributable to THC rather than CBD.

The results of this study suggest that dog owners using full-spectrum CBD products (which can contain up to 0.3% THC) should avoid large doses and pay attention to how their dogs respond.

Types of CBD

Isolate (pure CBD)

Full-spectrum hemp extract (CBD plus all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other natural ingredients found in hemp, including THC)

Broad-spectrum hemp extract, which is the same as full-spectrum but without THC

Full-spectrum CBD products are believed to be the most effective for both people and dogs because of the entourage effect.

Topical products might not be the first thing that comes to mind when using CBD for your dog. But they can be a good option for relieving localized inflammation at the paws, nose, skin, or joints.

We like the CBD pet balm from CBDfx, which provides 750mg of broad-spectrum CBD and other beneficial ingredients like Alaskan salmon oil and lavender, chamomile, and rosemary essential oils. At 12.5mg of CBD per ml, it’s one of the strongest pet topicals on the market.

The price also stands out, especially for a pet product — only 5 cents per mg of CBD. Spending over $75 also gets you free shipping.

California’s CBDfx is a top-tier CBD brand with various products for different needs. It provides detailed third-party lab test reports.

Dogs are more sensitive to THC, so it’s understandable that some pet owners may want to avoid full-spectrum CBD products. If that’s the case, we recommend the broad-spectrum CBD oil for dogs from CBDfx.

It contains undetectable levels of THC and comes in four strengths: 250mg, 500mg, 1000mg, and 2000mg. We also like that it’s flavored with chicken, making it easier for dogs to take.

CBDfx’s tincture costs 5-12 cents per mg, which is cheaper than average, with a lower price when you buy higher strengths. You can qualify for free shipping by spending over $75.

CBD for dogs FAQ

How does CBD help dogs?

Most animals, including dogs, have an endocannabinoid system. Although it’s not 100% identical to ours, it fulfills the same role of maintaining a healthy balance by regulating pain, stress, anxiety, inflammation, and more. CBD can provide potentially wide-ranging health benefits to dogs by interacting with this system, in addition to its effects on other bodily systems.

How much CBD should I give my dog?

The proper dosage of CBD depends on many factors, like your dog’s weight, body chemistry, and severity of health issues, among others. We recommend starting with the dose recommended by your product or 2mg per 10lb of body weight. If you don’t notice any changes, you can gradually raise the dose over time until you see the desired effects.

How do I give CBD oil to my dog?

You’ll get the most significant results by applying CBD oil directly to your dog’s gums, similar to the sublingual (under-the-tongue) administration method recommended for people. You can also get your dog to take the oil directly from the dropper. The least effective option is mixing CBD oil with your dog’s food.

What’s the best CBD product for dogs?

Like with people, we recommend giving your dog full-spectrum CBD oil. It will have the best effects, especially if you apply it to the gum line, allowing the CBD to absorb directly into the blood vessels instead of being swallowed. But other products also have their place, like treats for convenience and topicals for localized concerns.

At Innerbody Research, we take transparency seriously.

Innerbody Research is supported by readers like you. Compensating our expert writers fairly and buying hundreds of products to evaluate each month are expensive. In order to cover these costs and to keep our information free to users, we instead accept referral fee compensation from some companies referenced on our site. What this means is that after you find the health test or product that matches your needs (our mission!), click the link to the company’s website, and ultimately make a purchase, we sometimes receive a small commission from that company at no additional cost to you. Our research team is always on the lookout for discounts and promotions, so you may often find that your final cost may be lower. We can’t guarantee it will always be lower, but we can guarantee that it will never be higher.

If you prefer that we not receive this small commission, we recommend that you go to the company’s website directly (without clicking on our links). This will ensure we are not compensated in any way. The choice is always 100% up to you.

Editorial integrity matters to us.

Companies that we evaluate on Innerbody Research cannot compensate us to influence our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research. Additionally, we purchase all the products we review ourselves and do not accept free products. Getting our readers unbiased reviews and information written by qualified experts is our very top priority.
