Frozen Gelato (Strain Review)

This cannabis flower was purchased from Higher Ground dispensary in Eugene, OR in mid-August 2020

What we know: I heard some buzz about strain around town and only top-shelf buds were available, so I splurged. With almost 30% THC I’m expecting something powerful & long-lasting, and maybe that smidge of CBD will keep things calm.

There’s a few links out there about this. Most mention heavy euphoria, others say it is a 50/50 hybrid.

First Dose: Small dose (.040g smoked in a glass pipe – about one big hit, held in for 5 seconds)
It takes about 5 minutes and then my whole body relaxes, my brow droops down and things start looking a bit fuzzy. But there is some definitely stimulating activity keeping me alert despite letting out a yawn. I’m getting xanax-type vibes but also kinda uplifting in the head. It’s pretty rad. 25 mins in I’m enjoying sitting and watching a show and feeling a bit lazy as I let out another big yawn. This is definitely for the evening time. Bedtime may some early tonight. 40 minutes in and I’m slightly out-of-it but feeling happy and mellow. I’m relaxed and able to enjoy some light internet surfing.

At the hour mark I’m a bit less tired and enjoying eating a snack. There’s some nice narcotic activity in the head and body and I’m feeling good just stretching and moving my body and watching TV. Around 2 hours after dosing I head to bed and easily fall asleep.

Final Thoughts: Ahh, that was pure pleasure. Who doesn’t love full-body relaxation and some narcotic euphoria? This is a nice way to treat yourself at the end of the day, just don’t plan on getting anything done.

Second Dose: Micro dose (one meduim hit from a one-hitter)
Ahh that’s more like it. With a micro-dose I’m still able to access the pleasureable effects without feeling all tired. It works in the afternoon or afterwards. It’s a wonderful feeling indeed, relaxed, happy, and ready to indulge the senses. Listening to music with headphones and dancing around the room is heavenly. As is this drink i’m currently enjoying. I can still focus on stuff but there’s a hint of laziness there where I don’t want be productive, I’d rather just enjoy the moment.

Frozen Gelato is a pure fucking pleasure.

“The strain’s body-relaxing effects have been said to help with muscle spasms, inflammation, cramping, headaches/migraines and chronic pain. If consumed late in the evening, when the body is naturally inclined to go to sleep, it is capable of assisting with insomnia or other sleep issues,” notes Marijuana Break.

When compared to other strains, the buds of Gelato are smaller. What the strain doesn’t pack in size, it packs in looks. “Her buds tend to bloom in dark purple hues, illuminated by fiery orange hairs and a shining white coat of crystal resin,” informs Leafly.
Gelato is one of the strongest cannabis strains, but is likely best-known for its delicious flavour.

As for the Gelato strain, the California breeders released many phenotypes, which help determine inherent qualities. “Phenotype number 33 is the one most often associated with the strain—hence the name, Larry Bird, the old number of the basketball player,” notes Marijuana Break.
Gelato is an indica-dominant strain—qualities that include helping with mental and physical relaxation, treating acute pain, easing nausea and increasing appetite.
But don’t be fooled by its sweet (smelling and tasting) face; this strain packs a powerful punch perhaps best avoided by the uninitiated. With a high percentage of THC—short for tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabis compound known for causing a high upon consumption—the effects of Gelato are known to hit hard and fast.
Gelato is known and sought-after for its potent effects that have been described as a “forceful experience of blissful euphoria and physical relaxation that can be quite the ride.”
No proof exists that Bird ever smoked weed, though that wouldn’t be a surprise as up to 80 percent of NBA players reportedly consume. Meanwhile, the basketball legend is not the only one to have a cannabis strain named after him. Other examples include Tiger Woods, Mike Tyson and Michael Phelps.

In 2018, the word Gelato was a top search term on Leafly, a cannabis information resource that allows users to find products and buy them from licensed and regulated dispensaries. “In November alone, online users spent nearly 435,000 hours looking at the strain details and availability of Gelato at dispensaries near them, more than any other strain,” notes a Dec. 2018 article, Leafly’s Strain of the Year.
